However, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/renewable-energy-in-the-philippines-current-state-and-future-roadmap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">country aims<\/a> for 15.3 GW of renewable energy capacity in the grid by 2030, it is time to establish a more diversified approach to transitioning the Philippines&#8217; grid and supplying power to the growing population. For this reason, the national renewable energy program plans on expanding its current <em>wind energy<\/em> capacity by 2,345 MW by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-is-the-philippines-perfect-for-wind-energy\"><strong>Why Is the Philippines Perfect for Wind Energy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The potential offshore <strong>wind power <\/strong>capacity of the Philippines is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/events\/2022\/04\/12\/launch-philippines-offshore-wind-roadmap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">178 GW<\/a>. The growing electricity demand due to the increasing population and growing standard of living means that energy in the Philippines is <a href=\"https:\/\/asian-power.com\/power-utility\/news\/renewables-may-cut-philippines-electricity-rates-30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">very expensive<\/a>. This and the government\u2019s major renewable energy goals make the country fertile for domestic and foreign investors and wind energy developers. Also, reduced wind power tariff is good for the wind energy sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the World Bank estimates that the Philippines could expand its total offshore wind capacity<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/philippines-has-potential-21gw-wind-power-by-2040-world-bank-2022-04-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> to 21 GW by 2040<\/a>. The news is welcome for the country, as it plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/climatepromise.undp.org\/what-we-do\/where-we-work\/philippines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce its emissions by 75%<\/a> by 2030. The price of a wind turbine in the Philippines can vary significantly depending on various factors such as size, capacity, brand, and installation requirements. On average, a small wind turbine in the Philippines suitable for residential use can cost around $5,000 to $15,000 USD, while larger commercial turbines can range from $500,000 to well over a million dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-wind-farms-are-already-in-the-philippines\"><strong>How Many Wind Farms Are Already in the Philippines?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Philippines offers a unique set of favourable conditions for the further growth of wind energy, it is important to understand the current state of affairs in the grid. Namely, the Philippines is facing an energy shortage, especially as the gas reserves supplying 30% of energy to Luzon are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/market-intelligence\/philippines-energy-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rapidly declining<\/a>. In emergencies such as this, relying on the import of fossil fuels is the fastest solution but not the most practical in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we look at the long-term advantages and disadvantages, it is clear that the country needs to speed up renewables development. In addition, the current state of the grid makes it challenging to add new capacity without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1160114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">costly grid modernisation<\/a> and further heavy investments into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adb.org\/publications\/securing-access-electricity-variable-renewable-energy-philippines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new infrastructure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that the current energy market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trade.gov\/market-intelligence\/philippines-energy-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is dominated<\/a> (at a staggering 80%) by a single utility (Meralco) is concerning. It remains to be seen whether Meralco is willing to approve the higher initial investments often associated with renewable capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So far, there are eight large-scale wind farms in the Philippines:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table aligncenter is-style-stripes\"><table><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" Philippines?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Commissioned in 2014, the Burgos Wind Farm is the biggest wind farm and wind power project, with 50 wind turbines producing 3 MW of electricity each. Meanwhile, the entire farm has a total peak capacity of 150 MW and is connected to the Luzon Grid by a 43-kilometre long 115 kV transmission line. It is considered the best renewable energy project in the Philippines wind energy market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Development of this wind power project took place in two phases spanning over a year. At the time of completion, it was the largest wind energy farm in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-pagudpud-wind-power-plant\"><strong>The Pagudpud Wind Power Plant<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Burgos Wind Farm will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pna.gov.ph\/articles\/1170484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">be overtaken<\/a> by another wind energy project in the Philippines at the end of 2022: the Pagudpud Wind Farm. It will consist of 32 wind turbines and have an installed capacity of 160 MW. It will increase renewable energy supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the Pagudpud Wind Farm lags behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesfircroft.com\/blog\/2021\/11\/the-worlds-biggest-wind-farms?source=google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top 10 wind farms<\/a> in the world.
