The announcements come just before the Tokyo 2021 games and are captured in a <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/en\/news\/ioc-to-be-climate-positive-in-2024\">remark<\/a> made by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, Chair of the IOC Sustainability and Legacy Commission.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p><em>\u201cThe IOC\u2019s ambitious commitment to reduce its carbon emissions in line with the Paris Agreement is a clear testament to how seriously the IOC addresses the climate crisis and offers a powerful example of how sport can contribute to the global efforts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>The International Olympic Committee and its 2030 targets<\/h2>\r\n<p>To reach the Paris Agreement goals, the IOC targets a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. (ft.com)<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Tokyo Olympics is shaping up to be an example of the IOC\u2019s commitments and may well go down in history as the first truly \u2018green\u2019 games. (<em>Read our previous article discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/is-tokyo-2021-the-environmental-turning-point-for-the-olympics\/\">&#8220;Is Tokyo 2021 the Environmental Turning Point for the Olympics?&#8221;<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability Goals for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Tokyo Olympics (previously 2020) developed a sustainability plan and framework between 2016 and 2018. The plan set a <a href=\"https:\/\/gtimg.tokyo2020.org\/image\/upload\/production\/juykxnxjkjk19msywzad.pdf\">series of goals<\/a> for the games, including:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>100% of electricity is from renewable sources.<\/li>\r\n<li>99% of procured goods are reused or recycled.<\/li>\r\n<li>65% of waste created will be reused or recycled.<\/li>\r\n<li>Actively working towards zero carbon.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Of these, \u2018towards zero carbon\u2019 is the least well-defined. However, it represents the sentiment held by the Tokyo Olympic Games and the IOC: net-zero carbon is on the horizon.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Achieving 100% Renewable Electricity for the Tokyo Games<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Sourcing enough renewable energy for the Tokyo Olympics is no small task. Olympic officials estimate that close to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2021\/may\/20\/organisers-of-tokyo-olympics-press-ahead-despite-covid...\">80,000 people from overseas will attend the games<\/a>, plus several thousand more will travel internally within the country. This number calls for the energy requirements of a small city.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So far, the Tokyo Olympics sustainability committee has entered an <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/tokyo-2020\/en\/news\/tokyo-2020-to-use-renewably-sourced-electricity-in-games-operations\">agreement with ENEOS<\/a>, which will supply the required renewable energy. (Japantimes.com)<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sourcing Recycled Materials for the Tokyo Olympics<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Several initiatives have been put into place to meet the target of 99% recycled materials. A few of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/gtimg.tokyo2020.org\/image\/upload\/production\/juykxnxjkjk19msywzad.pdf\">prolific examples<\/a> include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Relay Torches &#8211; Recycled aluminum sourced from temporary housing built in the wake of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Olympic Torchbearer Uniforms \u2013 Recycled plastic bottles.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Olympic Medals \u2013 Recycled metals from electronics.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Podiums &#8211; Recycled plastic containers collected via public donation.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fossil-fuel-free-transportation\">Fossil-Fuel-Free Transportation<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Two ways of tackling the carbon impact of transportation are by using fossil-fuel-free vehicles and promoting public transportation.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Toyota, a key sponsor of the games, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fchea.org\/in-transition\/2020\/5\/25\/japans-hydrogen-olympics\">will supply<\/a> 100 hydrogen fuel cell buses and 500 hydrogen cars to the event. (Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association)<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-country-wide-carbon-offset-program\">A Country Wide Carbon Offset Program<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Tokyo Olympics sustainability committee has developed a robust <a href=\"https:\/\/olympics.com\/tokyo-2020\/en\/games\/sustainability\/sus-plan-carbonoffset\">carbon offset programme<\/a> built around promoting carbon reductions across the country. The Tokyo Metropolitan government and Saitama Prefecture were the ones to launch the program. These provide local businesses, organizations, and citizens with incentives to reduce their emissions and generate carbon offset credits. <em>(You can take a deeper look at the success of Tokyo 2021&#8217;s Carbon Offset Programme in our dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/tokyo-2021-carbon-offset-programme-a-deeper-look-at-its-success\/\">analytical piece.)<\/a><\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-monitoring-the-progress-of-tokyo-2021\">Monitoring the Progress of Tokyo 2021<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Tokyo Olympics have committed to a system of regular reporting to ensure transparency. This reporting is in the form of a series of \u2018sustainability reports.\u2019 The <a href=\"https:\/\/gtimg.tokyo2020.org\/image\/upload\/production\/juykxnxjkjk19msywzad.pdf\">most recent sustainability report<\/a> is the \u201cSustainability Pre-Games Report,\u201d released in April of 2020.<\/p>\r\n<h2>The Tokyo Games and its Key Green Points:<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Overall, the progress listed in the report is very positive, and a few key points include:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>An estimated 280,000 tonnes of CO2 will be reduced from the game\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>37,540 trees have been conserved or planted.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>5,000 medals have been made with recycled components.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/media\/image\/176450\/o\/Tokyo+2020+sustainability+infographic.jpg\" alt=\"Several sustainability targets were reported on in the Sustainability Pre-Games Report.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"707\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Results outlined in the Sustainability Pre-Games Report. From carbon offsets to renewable energy efforts and low emissions vehicles, the Tokyo Olympics appear to be placing sustainability at the forefront of its goals.<\/p>\r\n<h3>The Tokyo Olympics and its audience<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Olympic games are also a symbol for much greater and broader efforts towards net-zero carbon emissions. Both the IOC and Japan have recently made significant pledges to align with the Paris Climate Agreement. Even more importantly, the Olympic Games is one of the few events where countries, people, and athletes come together on such a massive scale &#8211; the 2014 Sochi Olympics had an audience of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/531768\/global-audience-of-the-winter-olympic-games\/\">2.1 billion people<\/a>. It is a platform to reach billions of people and shows that we, as a world, can make sustainability a priority.<\/p>\r\n<h3>The Tokyo Olympics and COP26<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Furthermore, the timing is almost perfect, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/cop26-is-this-make-or-break-for-the-paris-agreement\/\">26<sup>th<\/sup> UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties<\/a> meeting (<em>COP26<\/em>) taking place in November.
