In 2024, the country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbesafrica.com\/current-affairs\/2025\/04\/14\/global-solar-generation-growth-rate-up-29-in-2024-south-africa-sees-imports-of-3-8-gw-of-solar-panels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imported<\/a> 3.8 GW of PV modules, the highest on the continent, which pushed the total installed capacity to almost 9 GW. Yet coal <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/energy\/country\/south-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still accounted<\/a> for around 200 TWh of electricity generation, more than four-fifths of all electricity, while solar only reached around 20 TWh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"886\" src=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/electricity-prod-source-stacked-1024x886.png\" alt=\"South Africa electricity production by source in 2024\" class=\"wp-image-66694\" style=\"width:708px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/electricity-prod-source-stacked-1024x886.png 1024w, https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/electricity-prod-source-stacked-300x260.png 300w, https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/electricity-prod-source-stacked-768x665.png 768w, https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/electricity-prod-source-stacked-1536x1330.png 1536w, https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/electricity-prod-source-stacked-2048x1773.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/energy\/country\/south-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our World In Data<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That tension between rapid solar growth and entrenched fossil dependence defines South Africa\u2019s energy story in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-south-africa-s-solar-energy-landscape-in-2025\"><strong>South Africa\u2019s Solar Energy Landscape in 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/energy\/country\/south-africa#what-sources-does-the-country-get-its-electricity-from\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accounts<\/a> for 1.18% of the country\u2019s total energy supply and 8% of its total electricity generation. This comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine.com\/2025\/01\/20\/south-africa-adds-1-1-gw-of-solar-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adding 1.1 GW<\/a> of new solar photovoltaic in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While solar capacity growth declined compared to 2023, which saw 2.6 GW come online, solar is expected to pick up again in the next few years. BloombergNEF expects annual additions to <a href=\"https:\/\/about.bnef.com\/insights\/clean-energy\/coal-declines-amid-solar-boom-in-south-africa-in-five-charts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remain above<\/a> 3 GW through at least 2026, as long as policy support is maintained. The country&#8217;s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/south-africas-just-energy-transition-partnership-lessons-for-asian-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Just Energy Transition Partnership<\/a> will further support this growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-driving-growth\"><strong>What\u2019s Driving Growth?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The country\u2019s heavy reliance on outdated coal power plants and ageing transmission infrastructure is leading to major load issues, as existing generation capacity can\u2019t meet demand. This has resulted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/hir.harvard.edu\/power-hungry-the-influence-of-south-africas-electricity-crisis-on-national-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growing number<\/a> of power cuts and unplanned blackouts. In 2023, the country experienced 91 days of blackouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"747\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/South-Africa-Blackouts.png\" alt=\"Power cuts in South Africa per year, 2020 to 2023\" class=\"wp-image-66700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/South-Africa-Blackouts.png 747w, https:\/\/energytracker.asia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/South-Africa-Blackouts-300x177.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/pmn\/business-pmn\/south-africa-power-outages-may-have-reduced-growth-by-3-2-percentage-points\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Financial Post<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This energy uncertainty poses a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/662515\/stage-6-load-shedding-costs-south-africa-r900-million-a-day-sarb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">economic burden<\/a>, costing the country upwards of USD 50 million per day in the event of a blackout. As a result, the private sector is shifting towards distributed solar, which provides consistent power without relying on the grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, solar component prices are declining, which is reducing the levelised cost of energy (LCOE) of solar in the country. For example, the LCOE of solar is <a href=\"https:\/\/corporateandinvestment.standardbank.com\/cib\/global\/insights\/Big-energy-savings:-the-business-case-for-solar-investment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roughly half<\/a> that of purchasing energy from the local fossil fuel-powered grid. Combined, this is encouraging consumers to opt for cheaper and more reliable solar energy in South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-utility-scale-versus-distributed-solar-power-in-south-africa\"><strong>Utility-Scale Versus Distributed Solar Power in South Africa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-utility-scale-momentum-reipppp\"><strong>Utility-Scale Momentum: REIPPPP<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmre.gov.za\/Portals\/0\/Resources\/Publications\/Reports\/IPPPP\/IPPPP-Quarter4-Report-as-at-31March2024.pdf.pdf?ver=5GTn78y10qvjb_jky7_0XA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme<\/a> (REIPPPP) is the primary mechanism for permitting large private sector renewable energy projects that connect to the grid. Between its creation in 2011 until late 2024, 102 renewable energy projects had been permitted, with 90 already operational. This program is a major driver for public-private partnerships in the country and a way to incentivise foreign investment in its renewable energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-distributed-and-rooftop-solar-revolution\"><strong>The Distributed and Rooftop Solar Revolution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As discussed above, the country\u2019s unstable energy grid and declining technology costs are driving the adoption of distributed solar energy. Additionally, the government is rolling out incentives to speed adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/policies\/14168-increase-in-electricity-license-threshold-for-embedded-electricity-generation-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regulatory overhaul<\/a> pushed the license threshold for embedded generation from 1 MW to 100 MW. This exempts private solar projects of up to 100 MW from licensing with the National Energy Regulator, thereby reducing the barrier to new development. Homeowners received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.gov.za\/documents\/national%20budget\/2023\/2023%20budget%20faqs%20-%20solar%20panel%20tax%20incentive.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parallel boost<\/a> when the National Treasury introduced a 25% rooftop solar tax rebate for panels purchased during the 2023-24 tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cape Town has gone further. Its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineeringnews.co.za\/article\/capetonians-reach-r55m-earnings-mark-in-cash-for-power-programme-2025-02-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cash-for-Power<\/a>\u201d program has already paid out more than USD 3 million to 1,840 small generators selling excess electricity back to the municipal grid. Officials predict that earnings could double by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-challenges-on-the-horizon\"><strong>Challenges on the Horizon<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Grid capacity and ageing infrastructure are the biggest hurdles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energize.co.za\/article\/south-africas-municipal-electricity-distribution-sector-faces-looming-crisis-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Long-term underinvestment<\/a> in grid maintenance is now one of the leading causes of technical failures in the existing grid. There is a USD 1.8 billion maintenance backlog that grows by over USD 100 million per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymaverick.co.za\/article\/2024-11-25-transmission-lines-eskom-unveils-plan-for-electricity-freeways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accommodate new generation capacity<\/a>, the public utility will need to develop 14,500 km of new high-voltage lines and 210 transformers by 2032. Finding the capital for these projects and ensuring the capital is allocated correctly is a priority for South Africa\u2019s energy future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-powering-past-coal-the-road-ahead-for-renewable-energy-in-south-africa\"><strong>Powering Past Coal: The Road Ahead<\/strong> <strong>for Renewable Energy in South Africa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Solar energy in South Africa now stands at roughly 9 GW and is already helping to cushion the grid. <a href=\"https:\/\/fsdafrica.org\/new-research-suggests-africas-green-economy-could-create-more-than-3-million-direct-jobs-by-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Analysts forecast<\/a> up to 140,000 solar-sector jobs by 2030, indicating that the transition is both economic and environmental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, scaling from today\u2019s 9 GW to its <a href=\"https:\/\/taiyangnews.info\/markets\/south-africa-renewable-energy-master-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">goal of installing<\/a> 3-5 GW of renewable energy capacity per year until 2030 will require clearing the 14,000 km transmission bottleneck and unlocking cheaper capital. South Africa is on the right track, but it needs to continue implementing supportive policies to attract international investment to expedite new projects and grid strengthening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s energy landscape is slowly shifting.
